How the structure works
You keep Original Medicare. A private Medigap policy helps with some of your share of covered medical costs, depending on its plan letter. Prescription coverage is generally arranged separately through Part D. Medigap and Medicare Advantage are different structures and generally are not used together.
Compare plan letters and premiums
Standardized Medigap plan letters describe a set of benefits. Premiums can differ by insurance company even for the same plan letter, and may change over time. Review both the benefits and the premium, including any remaining deductibles or copays.
Provider access and travel
With Original Medicare, you can generally use providers across the U.S. who accept Medicare. Medicare SELECT policies may have network conditions. Some Medigap policies include limited foreign travel emergency coverage, with restrictions; this is not comprehensive overseas insurance.
Your Medigap enrollment window matters
The federal Medigap Open Enrollment Period lasts six months beginning the first month you are 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. Outside that period, an insurer may use medical underwriting unless a guaranteed issue or other protected right applies. This window does not repeat every fall.
Before switching coverage
Confirm whether the new policy is available to you, any underwriting decision, its premium, and its effective date before ending other coverage. A Medicare plan enrollment period alone does not create a Medigap guaranteed issue right.
