Write down the dates first
Get the employer coverage end date in writing. Then confirm your Part A and Part B status, applicable enrollment period, and desired Medicare plan effective date. Do not cancel existing coverage based only on an application being submitted.
Plan medical and prescription coverage together
A Medicare plan selection and an application for Part B are separate steps. Make sure medical and drug coverage begin when intended. If you are considering Medigap, review its enrollment protections and any underwriting before relying on that path.
Keep documentation of employer coverage
An enrollment period based on current employment may require employment and coverage information. Social Security can confirm the correct application and supporting documentation for your circumstances.
Resolve COBRA before it becomes a gap
COBRA is not current employment coverage for delaying Part B. Ask how it coordinates with Medicare and verify your Part B deadline rather than waiting for COBRA to end.
