Medicare Advantage vs Medigap in Utah
Two coverage structures. A decision that depends on your doctors, healthcare use, travel, budget, and preferences.
Look at the tradeoffs together.
Medigap supplements Original Medicare. Medicare Advantage is another way to receive your Part A and Part B benefits. They generally are not used together.
| What to compare | Original Medicare + Medigap | Medicare Advantage |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage structure | Original Medicare plus optional Medigap and a separate Part D plan. | Private plan provides Part A and Part B benefits; many include Part D. |
| Monthly premiums | Part B plus Medigap and Part D premiums, when purchased. | Part B plus any plan premium. A $0 plan premium does not mean all care is free. |
| Doctor access | Providers accepting Medicare across the U.S. | Verify providers for the specific plan and location. |
| Network restrictions | Usually no network for standard Medigap; Medicare SELECT is an exception. | HMO and PPO rules differ. Outside network costs or limits may apply. |
| Medical cost sharing | Medigap pays certain Original Medicare cost sharing based on the plan letter. | Plan copays and coinsurance vary by service. |
| Maximum out of pocket | Original Medicare alone has no annual medical limit. Medigap benefits and any policy limits depend on the letter. | Annual limit for covered medical services under plan rules. Premiums and Part D are separate. |
| Prescription coverage | Usually separate Part D coverage. | Included in many plans. Verify before enrolling. |
| Travel | Broad U.S. access with Original Medicare. Some policies include limited foreign emergencies. | Routine travel care depends on plan rules. Check time away and emergency coverage. |
| Prior authorization | Less common in Original Medicare, but requirements exist for certain services. | May be required for certain services or medications. |
| Additional benefits | Routine dental, vision, and hearing generally require separate consideration. | Some plans include extras with specific limits and eligibility. |
| Predictability of costs | Separate premium with medical cost sharing depending on policy. | Costs vary with the services used, up to applicable medical limits. |
| Plan changes | Part D changes follow enrollment rules; Medigap changes can involve underwriting. | Changes must fit an eligible Medicare enrollment period. |
| Medigap underwriting | Protected periods matter when buying or changing a policy. | Leaving Advantage does not automatically guarantee Medigap acceptance. |
A Medicare Advantage or Part D enrollment period does not automatically give you a protected right to purchase Medigap. Verify underwriting or guaranteed issue rights before ending coverage.
