The window starts on your birthday
Each year, the window begins on your birthday and ends 60 days later. It applies to people who are already enrolled in Medicare supplement insurance, commonly called Medigap.
You stay with your current insurer
The Utah rule requires your current Medigap insurer to let you choose a different Medigap plan that it offers when the new plan is considered comparable or a lower tier than your current plan.
Medical underwriting cannot block an eligible change
When the change fits the Utah birthday rule, the insurer may not deny enrollment based on medical underwriting. Confirm that the policy you are considering qualifies before ending your current coverage.
What the rule does not do
- It does not create a broad shopping period across every Medigap insurer.
- It does not guarantee a move to a plan with richer benefits.
- It is separate from Medicare Annual Enrollment from October 15 through December 7.
- It does not replace other federal guaranteed issue rights that may apply in specific situations.
What to ask before you switch
- Does this policy qualify as comparable or lower tier under the Utah rule?
- What will the new premium be, and how can it change later?
- When will the new policy begin?
- When should the current policy end so there is no gap?
- Are there any notices or application deadlines besides the 60 day window?
